Three people were rescued from a burning residential property in East Cleveland, Ohio, after firefighters responded to an early-morning fire on Orinoco Avenue. The dramatic rescue operation unfolded around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, when emergency crews arrived to find a duplex filled with heavy smoke and residents trapped inside.

The victims, identified in reports as two women and one man, were found unconscious but still breathing. Quick action by East Cleveland Fire Department personnel helped bring them out of the dangerous environment and get them medical attention.

The incident was later reported by local media on September 25, with Fire Chief David Worley praising the firefighters involved in the rescue.

Firefighters Encounter Difficult Conditions

When firefighters arrived at the Orinoco Avenue property, they quickly realized that people could be trapped inside. The situation was complicated by the difficulty crews experienced trying to open the entrance door.

According to Chief Worley, the victims were lying directly in front of the door, preventing firefighters from forcing it open. Smoke had filled the residence, creating dangerous conditions for anyone still inside.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Lieutenant Rodney Starks decided to use an alternative entry point. He broke a window beside the entrance, cleared the opening and climbed inside.

Once inside, Starks discovered the three unconscious occupants near the doorway. He proceeded to remove them individually, passing each person to other members of the responding Platoon C crew.

Three Victims Transported for Medical Treatment

The rescued individuals received immediate attention from emergency personnel before being transported to University Hospitals. They were subsequently transferred to MetroHealth Medical Center for further treatment.

The victims had suffered critical injuries associated with the fire and smoke exposure. However, Chief Worley later shared encouraging information about their condition, saying medical staff believed they had an excellent chance of making a full recovery.

The positive medical update provided some relief following an incident that could easily have resulted in fatalities.

Fire Chief Praises Lieutenant and Responding Crew

Chief Worley credited Lieutenant Starks and the firefighters working alongside him for their response, emphasizing the importance of preparation and regular departmental training.

He explained that the crew’s ability to respond quickly and adapt when the main entrance could not be opened played a significant role in reaching the victims.

The department also acknowledged the assistance of neighboring fire services, including crews from Cleveland Heights, University Heights and South Euclid, which provided mutual aid during the emergency.

The rescue highlighted the coordination required during residential fires, particularly when occupants are unable to escape independently.

Fire Investigation Continues

Firefighters eventually brought the blaze under control, preventing the emergency from developing into a larger incident. Investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the fire, although its precise cause was not established in the available reports.

No confirmed information about the property owner, the identities of the victims or the exact origin of the flames was provided in the initial coverage.

The Orinoco Avenue incident serves as a reminder of the dangers residential fires pose, particularly during overnight hours when occupants may be asleep and unable to respond quickly.

For East Cleveland, the successful rescue of all three occupants represented an important outcome from a dangerous emergency. The actions of Lieutenant Starks and the responding firefighters demonstrated how decisive intervention, teamwork and training can make a critical difference when lives are at risk.
