Four Colorado Police Officers Shot, One Killed, After Gunfight With Suspect Attempting to Board Bus in Lakewood

The incident unfolded near the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard, approximately five miles west of downtown Denver. Authorities said officers were dispatched to the area at around 6:30 p.m. local time following reports of a suspicious person who may have been connected to a hit-and-run incident earlier in the day.

What initially appeared to be a routine police response quickly escalated into a deadly confrontation, leaving multiple officers injured and prompting an emergency response from local authorities.

According to John Romero, public information officer for the Lakewood Police Department, officers encountered the suspect as the individual was attempting to board a Regional Transportation District (RTD) bus.

The situation reportedly escalated within seconds of officers approaching the individual. Romero told reporters during a press conference that the suspect suddenly opened fire on the responding officers, triggering an exchange of gunfire.

“Within seconds of agents approaching the suspect, the suspect opened fire on our agents. A gunfight ensued,” Romero explained.

The gunfight resulted in injuries to all four officers involved. The officers were transported to nearby hospitals for emergency medical treatment. Despite efforts to save their lives, one officer later died from injuries sustained during the confrontation.

The three surviving officers remained hospitalized following the shooting. At the time of the press conference, Romero said he did not have confirmed information regarding their medical conditions or the extent of their injuries.

Suspect Killed During Exchange of Gunfire

Police confirmed that the suspect involved in the shooting was killed during the exchange of gunfire. Authorities have not provided additional details about the individual’s identity, background or possible motive.

Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances leading up to the confrontation, including the initial suspicious-person report and the possibility that the suspect was involved in a hit-and-run earlier that day.

It remains unclear what prompted the suspect to open fire when officers approached or whether the individual had any previous interactions with law enforcement.

The circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death will also form part of the investigation as authorities work to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Civilian Also Injured

In addition to the officers and the suspect, a civilian was injured during the incident, according to Romero.

However, police have not explained how the civilian sustained the injury or whether the person was inside the Regional Transportation District bus, nearby on the street or otherwise caught in the exchange of gunfire.

Authorities have also not released information about the civilian’s medical condition.

The involvement of a public transportation vehicle has raised additional questions about the potential danger faced by passengers, transit employees and other members of the public who may have been in the area when the shooting began.
