A fatal stabbing in Melbourne’s central business district has prompted a major police investigation after one man died and another was taken to hospital with stab wounds on Friday evening, November 6, 2026.

Emergency services were called to Frederick Way in Melbourne shortly before 8:10 p.m. following reports that a man had been found with suspected stab wounds. Despite emergency efforts to save him, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second man, believed to be in his 30s, was located nearby a short time later with a suspected stab wound. He was transported to hospital, where his injuries were described by police as non-life-threatening.

The incident has raised concern in the city centre, particularly because of its location near Queen Victoria Market, an area frequented by workers, residents, visitors and tourists.

Police Establish Crime Scenes in Melbourne CBD

Following the reports, Victoria Police officers secured the surrounding area and established crime scenes as investigators began examining what had happened.

Police cordons were placed between Queen Street and A’Beckett Street, restricting access to parts of the area while emergency services and detectives carried out their work.

Homicide Squad detectives attended the scene to investigate the fatal stabbing and establish the circumstances leading up to the violence.

Reports indicate that investigators established two crime scenes approximately 100 metres apart. The separate locations are expected to form part of the investigation as detectives piece together the sequence of events.

The police response also caused disruption to nearby streets, with motorists and pedestrians encountering restrictions around the affected area.

Investigators Examine Whether Attack Was Targeted

One of the central questions surrounding the incident is whether the stabbing was a targeted attack.

Victoria Police confirmed that investigators were examining this possibility but had not reached a public conclusion about the motive.

Some accounts circulating on social media have suggested that the incident may have involved a confrontation connected to a food delivery rider and an altercation over a bicycle. However, these accounts have not been confirmed by police and should not be treated as an established explanation for the violence.

Authorities have not publicly identified the deceased man, and further details about the second injured man have not been released.

No Arrests as Investigation Continues

At the time of the police statement on Friday night, no arrests had been made. Detectives continued working to establish how the incident unfolded and identify anyone who may have been involved.

Police are appealing to members of the public who witnessed the incident or have relevant information to come forward. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Investigators may also examine available CCTV footage and other evidence from the surrounding streets and businesses to help determine the events before and after the stabbing.

Melbourne Community Awaits Further Updates

The fatal incident has left serious questions for the Melbourne community as authorities continue their investigation.

The death of one man and the hospitalisation of another have brought renewed attention to public safety in the city’s busy central district.

Police have not yet disclosed the identity of the deceased or confirmed the motive behind the attack. Further updates are expected as investigators establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

For now, the investigation remains ongoing, with homicide detectives working to determine what happened on Frederick Way and whether the violence was directed at specific individuals.
